Droppin’ Some Acid JAZZ

Well, music essentially is a drug. Especially when it comes to the "Medical Cures for the Chromatic Commands of the Inner City", which is the new record release title from Ron Westray, one of the most highly regarded trombonist of his generation. When listening to the record, I was looking for something Sly, Slick and Wicked. That’s where I came across track #2 titled “The Jiggy”, and indeed it did justice for me. The smooth groove of Ron’s skills on the trombone got me in the mood for some lounge activity, which was the exact ambience I was looking for. Though I was skeptical to the track title, with the played out term ‘Jiggy’, Ron brings it back with flavor, representing some new cool.

Membrane Penetration

Recently, I crossed paths with Sonic Radiation p.k.a. Todd Lastin again, a solo artist/producer out of the Dallas, Texas club scene. It was perfect timing to reconnect, as Sonic Radiation was providing a newly released EP as a free download offer for obvious promotional reasons; making it Open Music Wire ready! While listening to the EP, titled Electrolux, I began to review the album description, reading these two particular lines “Mixides transmit signals via the sonic spectrum and are produced by a single cell. Signal transmission penetrates through membranes and represents an entirely new principle for signaling in electronic systems”.

Don’t you sometimes read something, and say to yourself that you wish you had the same thought pattern you have now as when you were at some point in your past?  Well, I had that when reading both lines, as it made me think how realistic it could be for specific-produced industrial/electronic music to penetrate your membrane and influence the human electrical circuit, like maybe the meridians or channels, and even chakras for that matter. This way of thinking brought me back to the early rave days in downtown L.A., truly appreciating not just the electronica format itself (for what it just may do for the human body), but also  Sonic Radiation to provide such well produced material of its kind. So get your membrane penetrated with Electrolux; but just remember to wear headphones for protection.

Reggae Music Wanted

The many sub-genres of reggae music are continuing to grow, as we see hip-hop, neo-soul and electronica influences to help change the format up a bit, giving traditional reggae ‘ridems’ some friendly competition in record sales. At least that’s my perception as a reggae music fan that has been grounded in a vinyl and CD collection which hasn’t grown in recent years either, due to the fact I can listen to them over and over again.

Thanks to Haitian reggae artist Wanted, who recently contacted me from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, led me to his debut record project that motivated me to explore where the reggae scene was at worldwide. When I first listened to Wanted’s material, his natural vocal talent and musicianship made me want to grab my headphones and plug it into my lap top, as I re-played his single ‘Come Along’. After experiencing a handful of tracks, I called him back to see if he’d be interested in participating in OpenMusicWire.com, and what track he would like to offer as a free download to let music fans discover his talents. Wanted ended up choosing ‘Friday’, a party track that made a brother want to grab a drink of Caribbean rum for happy hour… before lunch!

On a more positive note, Wanted focuses strongly on humanitarian efforts, where he gives back to his community to help battle the fight of hungry children in his hometown of Jacmel, Haiti under the Jacmel Haiti American Children’s Assistance Foundation (JHACAF); an organization he co-founded in 2007. Wanted is also collaborating with other Haitian artists to write, record and perform a song about the issue of tree-cutting in Haiti, which is stripping the oxygen away from the independent nation. The song from what I hear will have a positive twist as that it’s tied into a program to help plant new trees for the Haitian people.

Hidden Beach Recordings, home of Jill Scott, Mike Phillips and Cornel West (to name a few), prepares to release Vol. 5 of their Unwrapped hip-hop/jazz hybrid series on June 24th, 2008, titled: THE COLLIPARK CAFÉ SESSIONS. This new compilation focuses on an "exciting and inventive contemporary jazz collection of southern hip-hop's club-ready singles that have been etch into pop culture," states Joe Wiggins. The first single is "Get Low", a jazz rendition of the hit song by Lil Jon and East Side Boyz. When we received "Get Low", the Open Music Wire staff felt that Internet radio and podcasts should check it out for program consideration on Urban/Rhythmic, Mix Show and Crossover formats. The radio version is ready for you to download.

The Indie Decision

Astrum Recording artist Michael Paige, who sings in multiple different languages, including English, Spanish, French, Italian and Hebrew, is quit impressive, especially for a vocalist that sounds amazing on the mic without cover-up production tactics. His music was recently picked up by Clear Channel Online Music & Radio to be featured in their NEW! program.

Michael's natural ability to captivate an audience will now be featured on a documentary called The Indie Decision. The central theme is something that may interest the indie artist and label community, as it focuses on making the decision to be indie and why Michael does not need a label deal. In fact, Michael turned down a couple deals, one with a major, in which we promised to not disclose, maybe because of legal advice or it just doesn't really matter. The trailer is now complete and can be seen on YouTube and at TheIndieDecision.com.

Underground hip-hop veteran S.U.N., abbreviated for Scientific Universal Noncommercial, begins to prepare for the launch of his 5th record this year. Titled "The One," this masterpiece comprises of hip-hop and nu-jazz beats with a neo-soul twist. We first listened to "The One - London Edition" back in September of 2007, which blew our minds, especially if you are familiar with his older material. The S.U.N. is rising and has matured to a whole new level

We recommend you to take a listen to Another Recipe, JPSR (joy pain sun rain) and Masquerade.
