Black History Month Special: West’s Side

Music Genre: Spoken Word | Urban/Rhythmic

By: Josh East

Most may know The New York Times Bestseller Dr. Cornel West as a professor at Princeton University, and previously at Harvard; though let’s explore his artist side for a bit. Dr. West’s third and latest CD, “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations” released on Hidden Beach Recordings, features a handful of lyrical assassins as in Jill Scott, Talib Kweli and KRS-ONE, where I was introduced to track title “Everything Gone Be Alright” for a Black History Month free download offer. On this track, accompanied by David Hollister and Chuckii Booker, Dr. West tells a story of joy and pain with his poetic signature of educating and uplifting listeners from one conversation to the next. If you don’t have a Cornel West record added to your music collection yet, I highly recommend this release in particular. For a taste of it, enjoy the free download offer and feel free to share with others, in celebration of Black History Month.

Respect the Benefit of Witnessing America in its Present Day

I once said,"Despite the challenges of being Black in Martin Luther King's day I wish I was there living in a time when Black America had a true leader." Now I say, "Thank you God for letting me live to see the day that an intelligent and respectable Black family is in the White House and leading the country that enslaved his ancestors." In a recent interview President Obama said "Hip Hop needs to [not only] be a rear-view mirror, but also be a mirror in to the future [displaying what can be]."Dr. Cornel West's record is that exact thing- it is the new Hip Hop. Black children no longer have "ghetto superstars" and "ballers", they have educated black men and women to look up to as well. It's cool to go to school and we don't have to speak ebonics to be black. This Hollywood definition if "Blackness" is over. May Cornel West stick a crucifix in that vampire's heart and kill it forever. Let it suck the blood of opportunity out of our black children never again.
