Modern Jazzmatazz

Music Genre: Modern Jazz

By: Josh East

It’s been a joy to hear Guru’s Jazzmatazz series throughout the years, but let’s bring it back to the modern jazz essence here. Not kickin’ Gurru to the curb in any way, as he and Primo have brought some major love to the hip-hop, soul and nu-jazz community. As we “Look At What The Cat’s Brought In”, which happens to be the title to Vol.1 of The Modern Jazz Stylings of Blue Canoe Records, this collective comprises of both young and veteran jazz musicians. The label has been kind enough to provide 10 of 12 tracks as a free download offer, making it tough to find that key track for programming and/or editorial consideration. Each track is professionally produced and sets off its own mood, though one stands out from the rest. Since I’m more of the vocal jazz cat, track 5 titled “What About April” resonates well with me. Take it for a spin. You won’t be disappointed.
