Posted on 27-Jan-11 02:54Music Genre: World | Native American |Ambient
With his latest album, prominent pre-Columbian flutist Xavier Quijas Yxayotl brings yet another classic with Mayan Ancestral Music: Healing Music for Mother Earth. The Mystical Mayan clay flutes and drums are alive and vibrating throughout this record. It’s a perfect charge for those who enjoy relaxing, meditation, healing, soul searching, journeying, and ancient voice music.
The CD liner, written by Xavier himself explains: “When I play my instruments I honor them with recognition, playing ‘their instruments, those that were left behind’. Through my music I feel I am fulfilling their prophecy, returning the sound back to the people of our Ancestors. Ancient Music for a New Generation…”.
The video down below gives you an idea of how much of an impact Xavier’s music affects a broad audience.

Xavier Quijas Yxayotl – Pearl Moon: Music for the Inner Spirit
Posted on 27-Jan-11 02:38Music Genre: World | Native American | Ambient
Xavier Quijas Yxayotl’s project Peal Moon, contains Aztec and Mayan music includes drums, clay flutes, turtle shells played with deer antlers, gourd water drums, and other ancient instruments that once filled the pyramids and temples of Meso America. The indigenous name "Yxayotl" (meaning ‘tears’ in Nahuatl) was given to Xavier during a 1977 peyote ceremony by Huichol Shaman elder Don Jose Matsuwa. As a proud descendent of the Huicholes, Xavier followed his dreams to investigate and play pre-Columbian music. Xavier is also honored to have had 6 of his 7 CD releases nominated at the Native American Music Awards, two of them for Flutist of the Year.
The CD liner, written by Xavier himself explains: “The songs, the music and the rituals that were dedicated to the Goddess of the night (Meztli-Luna) shines inside of our hearts. Filled with love for sacred spirits, that’s why our ancestors dedicated everything to her, that she deserved”.

Xavier Quijas Yxayotl – CODEX: Music of Ancient Mexico
Posted on 27-Jan-11 02:34Music Genre: World | Native American | Ambient
The classic release of CODEX: Music of Ancient Mexico has just been re-released digitally. To give you some history, in 2002, Xavier Quijas Yxayotl, one of Mexico’s most prominent flutists who not just records and performs pre-Columbian Aztec and Mayan music traditions, but also constructs the original music instruments himself, was honored to have his talent from the CODEX record produced and aired by PBS on their Behind the Arts special in 1997. This may seem like eons ago, however, Xavier continues to record, perform and appear in major settings from the Grammys (Los Angeles, 2002) to the United Nations Gala Event (New York, 2005).
I’ll leave you with the CD liner notes to get a better grasp: “As the ritual starts and we hear the ancestral sounds, the soul awakens, we hear the drums, rattles, and the clay flutes. This music from where our soul expresses itself enables us to feel the responsibility to continue with the tradition left by our ancestors in the Codex.”.
Also, the video down below is an interview of Xavier speaking on his traditional Mayan clay flute constructions, while playing a select few to give us an idea of how they would have sounded during certain situations in ancient times.

Camino del Sol – South American Music to the Mayan Calendar
Posted on 27-Jan-11 01:59Music Genre: World | Ambient
Being privileged to have studied with Mayan elders and calendar time and day keepers from both central and north America, it’s been a blessing to have come across “Camino del Sol: South American Music to the Mayan Calendar” crafted by Balanza, a group of musicians consisting of Martina Schroder, Wolfgang Krois, Diony Varias Astudillo, Santos Salinas Castillo and Werner Sinner. This well thought-out project has synchronized 20 track titles with the 20-day signs within the sacred Tzolk’in Mayan Calendar. These 20-day signs in combination with the numbers 1 to 13, creates a 260-day cycle.
So back to the music at hand, the main focus track is titled “Fuego Adentro” (that can also be seen in a viral video on YouTube) that represents the day sign ‘Kaan/Chicchan’, known as the feathered snake, the inner fire that fuels our creativity and lights up the way to truth and peace.
Additional focus tracks include “La Fuente” (day sign ‘Imox/Imix’) that represents the ancient source, the water of life, with strength that sustains and nourishes. Thirdly, track title “Compadre Viento” (day sign ‘Iq/Ik’) represents the wind, the divine breath, the breath of life, bringing clarity, consciousness and renewal.
Though this may seem like a new age theme to some, it’s a wonder to think how popular the Mayan 2012 information has infiltrated global government, media as well as the World Wide Web. Camino del Sol is magically composed with two guitars, flutes, an accordion and percussion. During the creation process of this masterpiece, Balanza infused themselves with intensive studies of Mayan literature and knowledge in and to the sacred calendar, so each song has been powerfully connected to the energies of its day sign. The combination of poetics and overall lyrical structure for each day sign gives great support in times of transformation on our way into the near future,
